Scandinavian Connection Feat. Rick Margitza
29 april @ 20:30 - 23:00
BellevueJazz Together with UtopiaJazz proudly presents Rick Margitza & Vanessa Liftig.
In 1989 saxophonist Rick Margitza joined the Miles Davis Band filling in for Kenny Garrett who couldn’t make part of a tour with Davis.
Margitza would be the last tenor sax player to be a member of a Miles Davis group.
After Margitzas stay with the band, Kenny Garrett would return with Miles until the trumpeters death in 1991. Prior to joining the Miles Group Margitza had toured with, among others, Maynard Ferguson and Flora Purim, he has also been a member of Maria Schneiders big band and has recorded with, among others, Tony Williams, Eddie Gomez, Bobby Hutcherson, McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea. Rick’s first three records under his own name were released on Bluenote Records.
This will be Margitzas 2nd gig in Gothenburg, the first being during the Festival Week at Unity Jazz in 2021 which was a collaboration between Bellevue Jazz and Unity. It was at Unity that singer/composer/producer Vanessa Liftig first connected with Margitza. Liftig had been a fan since childhood when she fell in love with his record ”Hope”. That record had a huge influence on how Vanessa hears both melody and harmony. But it took many years for the two to hook up, in between Liftig would be involved in many different musical situations, from opera (”The Magic Flute”, ”Porträttet”), musical (”Kristina Från Duvemåla”), Hip Hop ( Wu-Tang Clan, Cilveringz, Embee), and as a composer/producer/arranger and vocalist of her own (and others) pop music (3 releases under her own name: ”When Will Is Silent” ”Göteborgs Pyramider” and the EP ” Livet på Personalfest”). The hooking up between the two happened after Vanessa sent an arrangement of Rick’s tune ”Princess” from the album ”Hope”. Liftig had written a text and arranged the melody in voices. After hearing it, Margitza wrote back: ”We have to do something together!” So here they are, at Utopia on the 29th of April with a stellar rhythm section: From Denmark the powerful and lyrical Carl Winter on piano, from Finland (now living in Gothenburg, thank goodness!) Olli Rantala on bass, and, rounding out the band, the super swinging Chris Montgomery on drums down from Stockholm.
This should be a very cool night. Hope to see you at Utopia 29/4!
